Mandela Washington Fellowship - Summer 2022
Trisha Gukhool has more than seven years of experience in the realm of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Currently, Trisha is a freelance gender consultant at the United Nations Development Programme and other entities, focusing on identifying gender gaps at crosscutting levels encompassing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, the environment, climate change, health, invasive alien species, and more, and making policy recommendations to address those gaps. Trisha is also a bold and committed activist. In 2017, she initiated and led a campaign to remove the tampon tax in Mauritius. (In four months, the tax was eradicated.) Trisha holds a Master of Science in Gender, Development, and Globalization. She is driven to bring about change and promote gender equality because she grew up in a patriarchal society and has witnessed all forms of gender disparities and intersectional discrimination. She is a fervent advocate of equal opportunity, women’s rights, and women’s advancement. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Trisha plans to expand her engagement as an activist and involve more people in her campaigns to bring about concrete changes for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
