WASHINGTON – On July 25, the great promise of the African continent will be personified as 50 of the continent’s brightest young minds convene with international business executives, Washington dignitaries, and NGO leaders for Salute Africa: A Tribute to Mandela Washington Fellows.

Representing well over 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Mandela Fellows will have just completed their six week Fellowship in the United States on civic leadership and democracy-building. They consist of lawyers, journalists, NGO leaders, public health experts, and more – already with unmatched track records in public service.

Guests of Salute Africa: A Tribute to Mandela Washington Fellows will have unparalleled opportunities to celebrate and collaborate with Mandela Fellows as they begin their journeys back to serving their home communities.

Alongside Mandela Fellows, special guests are to include U.S. Senator Mark Warner and Ambassador Melanne Verveer. The pair will dive deep on the role of empowered women in advancing the overall economic development of Africa — and all nations. Following their discussion, CNN Sr. Correspondent Joe Johns, our evening emcee, will facilitate a Q&A with Mandela Fellows.

The evening will conclude with the presentation of two awards. The Presidential Precinct’s annual Young Leader Award will go to Dzikamai Bere for his leadership in human rights in Zimbabwe, and the inaugural Global Changemaker Award will go to Veronika Varekova for her work in conservation and wildlife across Africa.

Presented by the Presidential Precinct, Salute Africa: A Tribute to Mandela Washington Fellows is co-chaired by the Founder of the Presidential Precinct James B. Murray, Jr. and philanthropist Bruce Murray; Rick Goings, Chairman Emeritus of Tupperware Brands, and his wife, Co-Founder of the World Federation of Youth Clubs Susan Porcaro Goings; and women’s advocate Renee Grisham and her husband, author John Grisham.
