Safiya Ahmad Nuhu has more than five years’ experience as a lecturer in the Department of Public Law at Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria, and more than six years of engagement in civil society activities. She holds an LLB in Comparative Law (Common and Islamic Law), a master’s degree in Business and Commercial Law and an LLM. She has had professional training in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and in various aspects of International Humanitarian Law. She is a member of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protectio’ (PHAP) and has been a Judge in the Annual IHL Moot Competition organized by the ICRC, since 2011. She has experience as a consultant on researching justice institutions, and in training and mentoring Traditional Rulers (comprising Hakimai, Dagatai and Masu Unguwanni) on ADR, Sulh, Human Rights and Islamic Family Law. She was consultant to Jigawa State Government on the domestication of the National Gender Policy, and in the DFID Voices for Change baseline research on the ‘Status of Women and Girls in Legal Frameworks’. She is also a mentor in the Federal Government sponsored You Win program for youth entrepreneurs. Safiya is currently the research coordinator of the Kano Civil Society Forum (A coalition of over 80 CSOs in Kano State), which is focused on aiding the state towards ‘achieving human rights protection, promotion and sustainable development in Kano State.
