Lukeno Hangala has over three years of administrative work experience in various fields and has also volunteered with many international organizations. Lukeno is a lawyer, with a passion for international law and human rights. She is the co-founder and legal protection officer of Southern African Refugee Protection based in Namibia, a non-governmental organization that caters to the social, legal, and health protection of refugees and asylum seekers. Lukeno’s duties include running the day-to-day activities of the organization, consulting with various government bodies, international organizations, law enforcement officials, health service providers, refugees, and asylum seekers. She also engages in legal research and interpretation of refugee matters. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Lukeno plans to utilize her newfound leadership skills in civic engagement to continue her work in developing Southern Africa Refugee Protection and assist the government and other entities in developing Namibia’s refugee laws and raising awareness on the rights of refugees.
