Mandela Washington Fellowship - Summer 2017
“The Presidential Precinct, for me, has served as a great premise to continue the work that I’m doing, but more so to think bigger.”
Landa Mabenge is the Founder and Managing Director of Landa Mabenge Consulting (PTY) Ltd, a company with the purpose of exploring and enhancing the narrative of marginalized and vulnerable communities in South Africa. He has extensive private and public health sector experience and has a particular interest and focus on issues that affect the LGBTI community. Landa is currently engaging the Stellenbosch University (SU) Equality Unit as well as the Groote Schuur Transgender Clinic in an attempt to work towards changing the transition narrative from the current stigma-riddled reality towards one of humanity. This work is also aimed at challenging the current medical aid position of denying transition patients access to critical services. Landa has a passion for learning, teaching, mentoring, and motivational speaking. He currently serves on the boards of various NGOs which advocate for rights of vulnerable and often sidelined communities in South Africa. Landa is also passionate about community youth engagement and is a youth mentor at SAYes Youth Mentoring and provides much needed guidance, advocacy, and support to youth who are currently living in state facilities. Landa is a University of Cape Town Commerce alumnus and is currently pursuing his legal studies with a focus on human rights development. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, he plans to continue engaging the various entities spanning private, public, academic, and NGO in advocating for the rights of marginalized and vulnerable communities. He also intends to develop his consulting company to serve as a mentoring hub for education, awareness, and an access to information point for vulnerable minorities.
