Godfrey Kurauone is a Ward Councilor for the city of Masvingo, Zimbabwe. He came to the Presidential Precinct as a Mandela Washington Fellow in the summer of 2017 with the hopes of learning how to best mobilize young leaders in his community to build a more prosperous future for Zimbabwe and its surrounding nations.
Watch Godfrey's story below, and learn how you can support him on his journey.
In light of poor public health and resource management by the national government, Godfrey took it upon himself to take care of and mobilize his constituents. Godfrey was arrested on July 31, 2020 for feeding homeless people on a day that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had declared a national day of fasting. Later, a second charge was brought upon him for singing an anti-government song and blocking traffic for a funeral mourning the loss of malnourished community members.
Godfrey spent nearly 40 days in remand prison for the accusations against him; and yet, the government continues to delay in their ability to bring a strong legal case against Godfrey. Superseding the justice system with valiant congruence, threats from government loyalists remain rampant. Godfrey’s car has been burned and slaughtered animals left at his home for his wife and young daughters to find and internalize.
While the Precinct is not built as an advocacy organization, we do believe deeply in the power of our Network to support leaders around the world on their audacious journeys. In part because of staunch supporters like you, national leaders, government allies worldwide, digital media promoters, and so many others, Godfrey is now out of prison. Our proverbial needle pushes ever so slightly more towards justice. And we will continue in full support of his hope to mobilize young leaders to build a more prosperous Zimbabwe.
