Mandela Washington Fellowship - Summer 2014

“I'm happy to share the positive stories that are coming out of Ethiopia.”

Edda Zekarias Mekuria has eight years’ experience in teaching and communications. As a communications focal person for the Governance Unit of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ethiopia, she communicates development intervention results to government, international partners and the general public. Through field missions, she engages with local beneficiary communities to obtain their feedback on initiatives implemented by UNDP Ethiopia. She also supports UNDP events organized to facilitate knowledge dissemination, discussion and recommendations formulation with implementing partners including government, and other international development partners. In addition to taking high quality pictures both in the field and during deliberation sessions, she provides website management support and enhances social media communication. She provides coordination support to the UN Communication Group (UNCG) as Secretariat within the UN Delivering as One framework of the UN in Ethiopia, working with 26 other UN agency communications officers to enhance the visibility of the work of the larger UN in Ethiopia. Having studied peace and security studies in graduate school, and combining this with new skills she hopes to acquire during the Washington Fellowship, Edda plans to increase her contribution to UNDP Ethiopia beyond communications to assist with project development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation.
