Mandela Washington Fellowship - Summer 2024

Ahmad Abubakar has over five years of experience in the development sector, where he champions civic participation and youth mobilization for community development. Ahmad is currently the project lead for Turnup Jigawa, a youth-led civic engagement project that strives to develop active youth changemakers in democracy by collaborating with lawmakers to address major social issues. He is a 2023 Yiaga Africa Community Organizing Institute Fellow and a National Delegate for the Nigeria Youth Future Funds (NYFF) at LEAP Africa. Ahmad is a two-time grant winner who has influenced over 5,000 Nigerian youth through his civic engagement efforts. He has a bachelor’s degree in English from Bayero University in Kano. Ahmad is deeply committed to addressing the growing challenges posed by Africa’s youth unemployment, social exclusion, and low involvement in governance, all of which impair the continent’s long-term development trajectory. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Ahmad plans to use his knowledge and skills to accelerate effective leadership capabilities among 50,000 African youth and facilitate the creation of economic opportunities for 5,000 underserved youth by 2030.
