Mandela Washington Fellowship - Summer 2016
“The older generation of people - when we look up to them, they don’t have solutions because are not problems of their age. These new problems require young people to deal with them.”
Abel Chemura has over eight years’ experience building community resilience to climate change in smallholder perennial agricultural systems. He currently works in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology at Chinhoyi University of Technology, where he lectures environmental modeling, natural resources management and earth science. He is actively involved in the research and development of sustainable agricultural systems in the face of increasingly limiting environmental and socio-economic conditions, with a particular focus on plantation tree crops. Abel holds a BSc (Hons) and a joint MSc in Environmental Modeling and Management from Lund University, Sweden, and University of Twente, the Netherlands. He also helps young graduates to develop skills, find opportunities and build networks through social media platforms. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Abel plans to continue working on building climate resilience of perennial agricultural systems, strengthening the provision of technical assistance, and creating opportunities for graduates in Zimbabwe.
