The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative
President Obama’s Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellows Program empowers entrepreneurs and innovative civil society leaders to strengthen their capacity to launch and advance their entrepreneurial ideas and effectively contribute to social and economic development in their communities.

The Presidential Precinct is pleased to host 10 YLAI Professional Fellows in Charlottesville. These dynamic young entrepreneurs from 9 countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region will spend four weeks in “entrepreneur-in-residence” placements with some of Charlottesville’s leading small businesses, startups, and nonprofit organizations. They will participate in education and training sessions at UVA’s iLab and enjoy the historical and cultural opportunities our city has to offer.

IVLP Programs in Full Swing
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. The Precinct is honored to have three September IVLP groups from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Latin America.

James B. Murray, Jr. the Precinct’s founder, shares an article that he hopes may be interesting or thought provoking for the Precinct’s constituencies. In particular we hope to attract the attention of young leaders from around the world who may look to the Precinct for an unbiased, non-judgmental window into current thinking on democracy, the rule of law and best political practices. We will post each article on the Precinct Network in the spirit of stimulating dialogue and critical thinking.

Free Exchange | Believing is Seeing
This month, let’s look at an editorial from The Economist. Here we see a reasoned opinion about some of the core principles of nation building that we frequently discuss in Precinct programs. We also see a call for the west to do better.
